Canberra gets unfairly written off — until you see it in April when the entire city turns gold, and every major national institution is inside a 3km circle around the lake. Two days is enough for the galleries, the mountain sunrises and a couple of the country's best tasting menus.

Suggested itinerary

  1. Saturday · 8am

    Mount Ainslie lookout

    Drive or run up — the view frames Anzac Parade straight through Parliament. Autumn mornings often have frost at the summit.

  2. Saturday · 10am

    NGA + NPG

    National Gallery opens 10am. Allow 2–3 hours. The National Portrait Gallery next door is free and equally good for half that time.

  3. Saturday · 1pm

    Lake cycle + lunch

    Hire a bike at the marina, cycle east to Kingston Foreshore for lunch at Molto Italian or Black Fire.

  4. Saturday · Evening

    Dinner at Such and Such

    Braddon's tasting-menu standout. Aubergine in Griffith is the other splurge option — both book 4+ weeks out.

  5. Sunday · 9am

    Farmers market + Floriade (in season)

    Capital Region Farmers Market opens 7:30am Saturdays, EPIC venue. Floriade is open Sep–Oct only.

  6. Sunday · Midday

    Pialligo Estate lunch

    Farm-gate restaurant, orchard tours and smokehouse. Fifteen-minute drive out toward the airport.

Getting there

Canberra Airport (CBR) is 10 minutes from the CBD. Driving from Sydney is 3.5 hours via the Hume Highway; from Melbourne it's 7 hours.

Local tips

  • Autumn colour peaks late April into early May — Lake Burley Griffin shoreline is the standout

  • Canberra is 5°C colder than Sydney year-round; winter nights hit minus temperatures
