Dandenong Ranges in a Day
Puffing Billy, tall ferns, a stop at Sassafras tea-rooms and sunset at Sky High.
Forty-five minutes east of the CBD, the Dandenong Ranges are a dense wall of mountain ash, tree-fern gullies and Edwardian villages hidden in the forest. It's the easiest half-day escape from Melbourne — and the only one with a century-old steam train.
Highlights
- Puffing Billy steam train from Belgrave to Lakeside
- 1000 Steps Kokoda Memorial Walk (steep but doable in 45 minutes)
- Sherbrooke Forest walking tracks — look for lyrebirds at dawn
- Devonshire tea at Miss Marple's in Sassafras
- Sky High lookout at Mount Dandenong for CBD views at sunset

Unobstructed view across Melbourne to Port Phillip Bay. Drinks on the deck before driving home.
