Kangaroo Island Wildlife Weekend

Kangaroo Island Wildlife Weekend

Sea lions at Seal Bay, Remarkable Rocks, koalas in the gums — Australia's Galápagos.

Kangaroo Island3h from CBDBest time: October — AprilFamily-friendly

Kangaroo Island — 'KI' to South Australians — is a one-hour ferry crossing south of Adelaide that puts you on the country's third-largest island, where kangaroos really do outnumber people and the national parks come with their own sea-lion colonies. Two days is enough to hit the big-ticket wildlife without rushing the drive between sightings.

Highlights

  • Seal Bay Conservation Park — walk among Australian sea lions on the sand
  • Flinders Chase — Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch
  • Hanson Bay wildlife sanctuary for koalas in the wild
  • Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery — the last of its kind
  • Stokes Bay hidden beach via a limestone tunnel

Suggested itinerary

  1. Saturday · 8am

    Adelaide → Cape Jervis

90-minute drive south, board the SeaLink ferry for Penneshaw. 45-minute crossing; take the car across.

  2. Saturday · 11am

    Penneshaw → Kingscote

One-hour drive west. Pack a picnic from the ferry-town bakery; the pelican feeding at Kingscote at 5pm is worth timing for.

  3. Saturday · 1pm

    Seal Bay

Guided beach walk ($40pp) takes you within 10m of an Australian sea-lion colony. Boardwalk-only is cheaper but more distant.

  4. Saturday · 4pm

    Little Sahara sandboarding

Hire a toboggan from the Vivonne Bay Store. 70-metre dunes, bring a rash vest.

  5. Sunday · Morning

    Flinders Chase

Remarkable Rocks granite formations, then Admirals Arch for the New Zealand fur seal colony. Plan 3 hours including drive.

  6. Sunday · Afternoon

    Hanson Bay + ferry home

Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary has the easiest wild-koala spotting on the island. Catch the 4:30pm ferry from Penneshaw.

Getting there

90 minutes from Adelaide to Cape Jervis, then 45-minute SeaLink ferry to Penneshaw. The ferry takes cars; book the vehicle spot 3+ weeks ahead for weekends.

Eat & drink

  • Dudley Wines for Cape Willoughby Shiraz with a cliff-edge tasting room
  • Kingscote's Bella restaurant for a seafood-heavy Sunday dinner
  • Kangaroo Island Spirits — the country's oldest boutique gin distillery

Local tips

  • Distances on KI are real — budget 45–60 minutes between the main sites
  • National park passes are cheaper bundled; buy online before you arrive
  • Kangaroos on the road at dusk and dawn — drive under 60km/h on sealed roads
  • The 2020 bushfires affected Flinders Chase — regrowth is strong but services are still rebuilding
