Lake Eildon Boating Escape
Houseboat for the weekend, quiet coves, and fresh-caught Murray cod on the grill.
Lake Eildon is Victoria's inland water playground — a 500km shoreline of flooded river valleys, bush-covered coves and some of the country's best freshwater fishing. Hire a houseboat with friends and you'll vanish off the grid for 72 hours.
Highlights
- Two- or three-night houseboat hire, no licence required
- Murray cod and golden perch fishing in the secluded upper arms
- Bonnie Doon and the old Point hamlet (yes, the 'Castle' location)
- Fraser National Park swimming and bushwalking
- Sunrise from the top deck with mist rising off the water
Suggested itinerary
- Friday · Afternoon
Collect the houseboat
Check in at Eildon Houseboat Hire, 2-hour briefing, out on the water by 3pm. Pilot at walking pace.
- Friday · Evening
First cove, first swim
Pick a quiet arm (avoid the Pondage), drop anchor, swim off the back deck before dinner.
- Saturday · Dawn
Fishing, Murray cod country
Cast for cod and yellowbelly — morning bite is the window. Licences can be bought online.
- Saturday · Midday
Bonnie Doon swim
Pull into the Doon for a lunch swim and a walk up to the Bonnie Doon pub for a schnitzel.
- Saturday · Evening
Star-gazing cove
Anchor in an isolated arm. No light pollution — Milky Way visible on a clear night.
- Sunday · Morning
Return to dock
Back by 10am check-out. Stop at Jerusalem Creek or the Eildon Pondage for a final swim.
Getting there
2.5 hours via the Maroondah Highway (B300) through Healesville and Yea. Stock up on provisions in Yea or Alexandra — the Eildon IGA is small and pricier.
Eat & drink
- Bonnie Doon Hotel — old-school pub with the lake view
- Eildon Bakery for morning pastries before departure
- Flowerdale Hotel for a detour lunch on the way home
