Rottnest Island Quokka Day

Rottnest Island Quokka Day

Ferry from Perth, bike around the island, quokka selfies and 20 snorkel bays to choose from.

Rottnest Island45m from CBDBest time: October — AprilFamily-friendly

Rotto — 30 minutes by ferry off Fremantle — is Perth's favourite escape and the only place on earth where 12,000 quokkas will photobomb you without warning. A single bike-able loop links 20+ swimming beaches and reef bays, which is why the island runs on two wheels and nothing else.

Highlights

  • Quokkas at the Settlement and Kingstown Barracks — they are everywhere
  • The Basin — turquoise, sheltered, reef all around the edge
  • Pinky Beach and Bathurst Lighthouse — the picture-postcard
  • Little Salmon Bay snorkel trail (marked underwater signs)
  • Wadjemup Lighthouse climb for a 360° island view

Suggested itinerary

  1. 8am

    Perth → Fremantle ferry

Rottnest Express and SeaLink both run from Fremantle's B-Shed. 30-minute crossing; book the early service for a full day.

  2. 9am

    Hire bikes + loop begins

Pedal Bay or hire on the ferry. Full island loop is 22km with gentle climbs — 3–4 hours with swim stops.

  3. 10am

    The Basin + Pinky Beach

Closest swim bays to Thomson Bay. Shallow, calm, great for kids. Lockers near the main bakery.

  4. Midday

    Lunch at Thomson Bay

The Rottnest Pub's beer garden, Lontara for Indonesian, or the bakery for a pie and a beach picnic.

  5. 2pm

    West End snorkel

Little Salmon Bay has an underwater interpretive trail. Seals often at Cathedral Rocks in shoulder season.

  6. 4:30pm

    Ferry home

Last ferries around 5:15pm weekdays, later on weekends — check return time before you pedal out.

Getting there

30 minutes from Perth to Fremantle, then a 30-minute ferry ($65 return adult). The 90-minute Hillarys ferry is pricier but faster if you're staying in Perth's north.

Eat & drink

  • Lontara at Hotel Rottnest for upscale Indonesian with an ocean view
  • Rottnest Bakery for the island's best sausage rolls
  • Geordie Bay General Store for a proper mid-loop ice cream

Local tips

  • A $20 island admission fee is bundled with most ferry tickets — check before buying separately
  • No cars for tourists — bike, walk, or take the hop-on bus for $30
  • Quokkas are protected — a $300 fine for touching, and they'll chew your backpack straps
  • Winter is whale-watching season; summer Saturday ferries sell out a week ahead
